GCC Men’s Basketball: Midseason Report

The men of the Glendale Guacho’s basketball team has had many triumphs this season thus far. With theteam currently at a 11-9 win to loss ratio this season, head Coach Damin Lopez believes the team isheading in the right direction after challenges they face at the beginning of the season.
At the beginning of the 2013-2014 season, the team unfortunately lost two starting guard, sophomore’sEmery Range to a heart disease and J’my Holloway to Lymphoma. Holloway has just recently conquered12 treatments of chemotherapy and his team is very proud of him for this.
Though the team lost these two wonderful players, the coaching staff has a great outlook for the rest ofthe season.
“ We are the middle of the playoff race and that for me right now is a step better than it was in my firstseason. Having won 6 of our last 8 games I feel that we are beginning to hit our stride and producepositive results,” Says Head Coach Damin Lopez in hopes for his team to push on through the playoffs.
With high hopes for the team, they also have a few accomplishments worth noting this season. SophmoreRonald March has been named not only the MVP of the College of the Desert Tournament but is also theleading scorer and in the top to in the country for that.
Other standout player accomplishments come from sophomore Michael Barry: Top 10 FT shooter in thecountry, leading the ACCAC in FT percentage and was in the all-tournament team at the Imperial ValleyHoliday Tournament.
Other standout players noted by the coaching staff include Jordan Didier, Anthony Hendrix, EnochRhemadji, Alex Johnson, and Tanner Waldrip.
The GCC Men’s Basketball Team has played a great season so far and has an amazing turnout at eachgame, with loyal student fans coming to see them.
“I have always enjoyed coming to the basketball games here at GCC and the improvement of the playersthis season is great!” Says Savannah Buller-Ritch, a sophomore here at Glendale who can often be seensitting in the stands cheering on the team whenever she can.
If you’d like to come cheer on the Men’s Basketball team like many other students the next home game ison February 5th against Tohono O’Odham. Come out to support your playoff bound Men Guachos!
