On Tuesday February 18, the Glendale Community College softball team hosted the Central Arizona College Vaqueras in back to back games.
The Gauchos have had an up and down season going 5-5 in their last ten games which includes a 4-game losing streak with losses coming at the hands of Paradise Community College, Pima Community College, and 2 loses to Phoenix college.
In the first game of the double-header, the Gauchos fell to Central Arizona College 11-8. Lead by Glendale’s Lacey Fitch’s 4 runs batted in and 2 homeruns, it was not enough to netrauilze the Vaqueras offense. The pitchers for the game were Jordyn Parsons and Nancy Figueroa.
The pitchers in the second game of this match-up were Kaylee Romo and Jordyn Parsons. The contest got off to a slow start with the Vaqueras getting a base hit and went 3 and out shortly after that at the top of the first inning. At the bottom half of the inning, no. 12 Tori Pogue gets a base hit after the count was 1 ball and 2 strikes. After that, Chihiro Furuta was up to bat for the Gauchos. A few pitches into the at-bat, Pogue steals second base, but Furuta was eventually walked. The next batter for Glendale was struck out and the inning was over.
At the top of the second inning, Central Arizona College struck first as no. 10 Alexzandra Blanco hits a double down center field. The next batter for the Vaqueras hits single allowing Blanco to run home and making the score 1-0 for Central Arizona College. The next 3 Vaqueras players all grounded out ending the inning. After two innings of back and forth action, the Gauchos were up to bat at the bottom of the 4th inning. The inning began with no. 17 Lacey Fitch getting struck out. Shortly after, no. 6 Sianna Gomez for Glendale Community College was hit by pitch which allowed her to walk to first base. Once Gomez took her base, no. 2 Nicole Himes was walked after a strong at-bat. With 2 runners on base and only 1 out, The Gauchos hit a ground ball base hit causing a bases loaded situation with only 1 out. Glendale Community College then hit single causing 1 player to touch home base and tieing the score 1-1. With the bases still loaded, no. 19 Rebecca Burkland struck out and Tori Ortiz grounding out which ends a strong inning the Gauchos.
With 1 out at the top of the 5th inning, Central Arizona College hit a ground ball then the Gaucho pitcher threw the ball over the first basemans head causeing an error and allowing the Vaquera player to take second base. While no. 32 Mariah Trujillo was up to bat, the runner on second base successfully steals third base. As no. 8 Hailey “Buggs” Torrez was walked, that set up 2 runners on first and third base and nobody out situation. No.00 Sarah Tribe got a base hit allowing 1 run to come in as Central Arizona College takes the lead 2-1.
Once the Vaqueras took the lead they never looked back as Glendale Community College was only able to earn 1 run in the bottom of the sixth when Jazzmin Garcia hit double allowing 1 run to score. At the top of the 7th inning, Central Community College put on the finishing touches as they scored 4 more runs making the final score 6-2.
After dropping 2 games in row, the Gauchos will look to get back in the win column when they host their division rival Eastern Arizona College on Saturday, February 22.
