(Thatcher, AZ) The GCC Football team started its 2014 campaign off strong Saturday with a 28-0 victory over hosts Eastern Arizona.
After a slow First Quarter which saw no scoring, the Gauchos got on the board first and didn’t look back. Freshman Terry Juniel got things going with an 86-yard punt return that resulted in an early lead for the Gauchos. In the second half, GCC ran the ball for three more scores in the shut-out victory. Leading the charge on offense was second-year tailback Branden Jenkins. He carried the ball for 131 yards and scored twice in what was a primarily run-oriented offense for the Gauchos, with only 48 of the team’s 308 offensive yards coming through the air. Sophomore Roland Genesy added a final score along with 96 yards on the ground.
Leading the way on defense was Sophomore linebacker Joey Scelza who amassed 14 total tackles on the day. Defensive lineman Addison Palomino also contributed to the efforts with four tackles and a sack. The Gaucho defense was able to hold the Gila Monsters to a shut-out while allowing 237 offensive yards.
Glendale will look to continue their promising start when they host the Thunderbirds of Mesa Community College in their first home game of the season. Mesa will be looking to bounce back from a tough 59-21 loss to Snow College. A very balanced Mesa offense enters this weekend’s contest at 0-1 after gaining 162 yards on the ground and 243 via quarterback Austin Apodaca. His three Touchdowns through the air pose a threat to the Gauchos secondary, although his three interceptions last Saturday are a sign of weakness. Kick-Off is this Saturday at 7:00 pm.
