The GCC Football team improved its record this Saturday defeating Mesa by a score of 48-27. The win over the weekend will bring the Gauchos to a 2-0 record early on in the season as they look to continue their dominance against Scottsdale Community College this upcoming Saturday.
A slow beginning to the contest got up and running with a 24 yard scamper from Roland Genesy in the 10th minute of play. The Sophomore running back finished the day with 96 yards on the ground and three scores in what was once again a dominating performance rushing for the Gauchos, with 250 yards from the run game. The remaining three scores in the first half all involved Quarterback Jeff Kidd. After a rushing touchdown from the Sophomore, he would throw 2 of his 3 passing touchdowns on the day in the second quarter, including one to Sophomore Terry Juniel. Kidd finished the day with 227 yards through the air, including his three touchdowns.
The defensive efforts were led by Shadow Williams, whose 12 tackles on the day led the team. He also added in one of the Gauchos’ 8 qaurterback sacks on the day. De’Aundre Sanders contributed 7 tackles to the cause and Freshman Jeremy LaGasca forced a fumble early in the game.
The Gauchos dominated the first half offensively, and in the end finished the day with 477 yards to their credit, while only allowing the Thunderbirds of Mesa 373 yards. The Gauchos’ secondary was exposed, giving up 372 passing yards to Mesa quarterback Austin Apodaca. The Pass Rush proved worthy however, sacking Austin 8 times on the day, including three from Christian Hill. The run game never clicked for the T-Birds, as they finished the day with a negative amount of net yards on the ground.
The Thunderbirds of Mesa will drop to 0-2 on their early season, and are looking to pick up the slack against upcoming opponents Phoenix College.
GCC will go into their upcoming home game against Scottsdale with a more balanced offensive attack, after only throwing for 48 yards in their opener against Eastern Arizona. Scottsdale will enter the game at 0-1 having lost their first game of the season 49-20 by the hands of Arizona Western. One to look out for for the Fighting Artichokes is that in Sophomore Quarterback Michael Sanders, who threw for over 200 yards against Arizona Western this past Saturday. The Following weekend the Gauchos will be traveling to New Mexico for their second away game of the season.
