Arizona offers a variety of events in preparation of Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is here. It doesn’t last but three short, action-packed hours and it’s expensive. Fundamentally, nearly every student lacks necessary funds to do more than watch the game on TV. Luckily, there are several events in the metropolitan area that are made for celebrating the big day – on a budget. Here are the dates, summaries and prices of events leading up to Sunday:

 

1/27 – 5/3: Gridiron Glory: The Best of the Pro Football Hall of Fame

 

Found in the Sybil B. Harrington Gallery on level three of the Arizona Science Center, one can find an expansive display of over 200 football artifacts. Included in the exhibit are several interactive displays as well as stories of the game’s legends, pioneers and memorable experiences. Admission to the exhibit is $8 for members and $12 for non-members. Admission to the museum itself is free for members and $16 for non-members. The Arizona Science Center is located at 600 E. Washington St., Phoenix. More information is located on their website, azscience.org.

 

1/27 – 2/1: The NFL Experience Engineered by GMC

 

Located at the Phoenix Convention Center is this NFL themed park. More details can be found in the featured article in this issue. This $35 (for adults; $20 for age 12 and younger) event will take place on both Third and Washington streets. More info can be found at ticketmaster.com, superbowl.com and by calling 866-849-4653.

1/28 – 2/1: Verizon Super Bowl Central

 

This Super Bowl street fair is great for those who don’t want to shell out the $35 for the NFL Experience. Running 2-10 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., this family and student oriented festival has everything from free activities to live music and even autographs. The highlight of this big event is the Grand Canyon Experience, a massive 30-by-100 foot climbing wall with 20 climbing positions and an 18-foot waterfall that flows down the middle. For just $5, fans 6 and older can climb this great wall. This massive event, which will feature live shots from NBC, MSNBC, CNN and others, will span a massive 12 block area around First and Jefferson streets.

 

Through 2/2: CitySkate at CiyScape Phoenix (this can be cut if necessary)

 

Filling a massive 5,442 square feet (as opposed to last year’s 3,996), CityScape takes over Central Avenue with real ice. This family-centered fun runs daily between 11 a.m.  – 1:30 p.m.. Also, skaters can enjoy the rink Sunday-Friday between 4-11 p.m. and on Saturday starting at 4 p.m. and going until midnight. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for students with ID and $6 for military and includes skate rental.

 

1/29 – 2/1: Puppy Bowl Cafe

For animal lovers, Animal Planet will host Puppy Bowl XI at The Corner at CityScape. All week, puppies from the Arizona Humane Society that are available for adoption will be waiting on location to be played with for free. The puppies make their appearance each day at 10 a.m.

 

1/29 – 1/30: Truckin’ Awesome Super Bowl Fest at DeSoto Central Market

 

A wide selection of food, live music, ping pong, corn hole and arts and crafts vendors will take over the patio at the newly renovated C.P. Stephens DeSoto Six Motorcars building. This restaurant and dining hall – which plans to open mid-February – will donate proceeds to the Evans Churchhill Community Association. This Super Bowl fest takes place between 4-11 p.m. and is free. More info on the restaurant and location on Central Ave can be found at their website, desotocentralmarket.com.

 

1/29 – 1/31: FanFest at Rawhide

 

This carnival will feature food trucks, live music, appearances from former and current NFL players as well as a special opportunity to play a game against the pros. Challenge the Pros is a special football event played for charity. Coaches and players will put participants through a flag football tournament and a skills challenge. The top performers will then play in a flag football game against the NFL players. Registration for this is at 9 a.m. and the game is played between 10 a.m. and noon. The event itself runs 9 a.m. – 11 p.m. on Thursday and 10 a.m. – 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. General admission is $20, carnivals and attractions run $15 and Challenge the Pros costs $20. Those up for the drive to 5700 W. North Loop Road, Chandler will be paying $20 for general admission, $15 for carnivals and attractions and $20 for Challenge the Pros.
