The Arizona Coyotes faced off against the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Gila River Arena on Saturday Jan. 21, 2017 with a score of 5-3.
In the beginning of the game, the Lightning started off by winning the opening face-off and began with the possession of the puck. Unfortunately for the Lightning, that possession was shortly lived.
In the first 9:40 into the game, Coyotes right-winger Tobias Rieder scored the first goal of the game thanks to a sneaky shot from that went into the back of the net. Just a minute and a half later Coyotes right-winger Radim Vrbata scored the second goal of the game.
Before the period ended Lightning forward Cedric Paquette off a rebound from a shot deflected by forward Gabriel Dumont, and the period ended with a score of 2-1.
The second period started off with a bang, with 9:05 into the period a fight breaks out between Coyotes forward Peter Holland and Lightning left-winger Ondrej Palet. Both players attained four minutes in the penalty box.
Just a few minutes later Lightning forward Valtteri Filppula would join Palet in the penalty box for hooking.
As there were two Lightning players in the penalty box, the Coyotes took the 5-3 player advantage and it led to a goal by defender Michael Stone 6:44 left in the period. Just two minutes later Coyotes right-winger Christian Fischer scored his first goal of his career.
Three minutes later forward Martin Hanzel scored the fifth and final goal for the Coyotes.
This goal would not just be the final goal the Coyotes would score, it would be the game winning goal.
At the end of the second period the score was in the Coyotes favor 5-1.
In the third and final period was all the Tampa Bay Lightning. To open the third period the Lightning won the opening face-off.
Within the first 9:25 into the period, Lightning forward Vladisav Nametnikov scored just the second goal of the game for the Lightning. Then later in the period the Lightning go on to have their own power play and have a 5-4 numbers advantage due to a slashing penalty against Coyote right-winger Shane Doan.
With this numbers advantage, the Lightning are able to capitalise on the advantage leading to a goal by left-winger Ondrej Palet.
Throughout the entire game both Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy, and Coyotes goalie Mike Smith. Both goalies had to defend a combined total of 71
