On the evening of Friday August 23rd, The Lady Gaucho’s volleyball team defeated the Lady Matadors of Arizona Western College (Yuma, Az) sweeping the first 3 games in the best of 5 series. The game scores were 30-13, 30-19 and 30-17
“This was our first game, our players will take a little time getting used to each other. Playing against Glendale Community College is always fun, but we will look for adjustments to make for the next game.” said Coach James Finley of Arizona Western College.
“I was really pleased by the effort our girls put out. They played hard, and they played all the way through.” said GCC volleyball coach Lisa Stuck.
The whole team contributed, yet outstanding team play was done by Freshmen Tessa Boone, 5’10” Opposite who had 10 kills, 11 digs. Returning sophomores Rachelle Lacy had 3 of the team’s 4 blocks, and Sophomore Stephanie Kohner had 18 digs.
Last season, Arizona Western Lady Matadors defeated the Lady Gauchos in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 1 Championship game, but GCC still wound up as the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Championship with a record of 16 wins, 2 losses and an overall record of 32 wins and 8 losses.
The Lady Gauchos also finished ranked 12th in the Nation overall according to the final NJCAA poll.

The next home volleyball game is Friday August 30th in the GCC gym against Yavapai College.
There is an admission charge of $3.00 for adults, $2.00 for students; however, there is no charge for GCC students and employees with IDs.
