Glendale Community College has been offering new classes and more discounts since last semester and the positive effects have continued into this semester according to Susie Kimball.
Class registration is available year round for GCC students and community members. The fitness center offers drums circle, aromatherapy and meditation, yoga nidra and lap swimming according to Susie Kimball.
The classes have flexible credit hours, starting at non-credit through two credit hours. The credit hour is a regale academic school credit.
For example, drum circle is more than physical exercise. It also represents African American culture. African American students are more interested in signing up for drum circle to learn about their culture.
Drum circle and yoga can help students improve their health. These classes give opportunity to exercise physically and emotionally according to Susie Kimball.
“I pay $40 for the whole semester. Here it is cheaper. Outside centers like LA Fitness charge more – it is about a hundred dollars,” GCC student Alexis Soto said.
The fitness center gym has everything for working out and the place is more comfortable than other places, Soto said.
The fitness center discount program is working in many stages. Some students can receive more of a discount than other students. GCC offers larger discounts to Fitness & Wellness Department students, the GCC Dance Company, MCCCD Employees GCC Athletes, seniors 60 percent, firefighter students, paramedic students, nursing students, alumni and veterans. The discount is available in both campuses, main campus and north campus.according to the GCC fitness center.
“Fitness is the fountain of youth,” Adjunct Faculty Senior Fitness Adviser Kimball said. Trainers are available to guide students to have a better body shape, and the staff employees are also available to help new students any time during the business day. They work with new students and members to educate them about the exercise machines. The fitness center full service is available from 8 a.m. through 8 p.m.
