The GCC mens basketball team defeated the Grand Canyon University club team, 90-67, in a game played at GCC on Wednesday Nov. 8.
The Gauchos started the game fast, and jumped out to a 10-0 lead to start the game. Coach Meyer was really impressed with the way his team played.
“Guys played hard, I thought we had good defensive energy to start the game. I thought we shared the ball really well, which is something we have been working on as a team. I thought we competed. [The key to the fast start] was the preparation. every day we train on playing fast, both defensively and offensively. I think the guys have slowly become accustom to that and have become comfortable with that,” Meyer said.
This game was a learning experience for the Gauchos and an opportunity for the them to get some game experience and prepare themselves for upcoming conference games.
“Going into conference play, knowing they have good players, I think we have to prepare for personnel, we have to prepare for actions of other teams. We have to go in knowing that are best chance for competing and winning comes with being the hardest working and most competitive team,” Meyer said.
This was the first home game, and first home victory for new head coach, Guy Meyer.
“It feels good, I’m happy to be here, I love our guys, and we will see what happens,” Meyer said.
Dominique Bradley had a really solid game for the Gauchos, his 18 points was the second most scored on the team, and his 17 rebounds were a team high. Bradley finished the game 7-11 from the field and went 2-4 from beyond the arch. He also made both of his free throw opportunities.
“Honestly the key for me was just rebounding, and just buying into the program and running the offense right,” Bradley said.
Bradley said it has been an adjustment this year with Meyer being the new head coach, however he likes the way things are going.
“It has been a weird adjustment, honestly when my coach left I was about to transfer, but I ended up staying. He can be very hard at times but he just wants the best for you. It makes me feel good, I feel like he can take me to where I want to go. I want to play basketball at NAU next year and I feel like he can take me there” Bradley said.
The Gauchos will start their conference season on Tuesday Nov. 21, at Chandler-Gilbert. That game will get started at 7:30 p.m.
