The GCC women’s basketball team narrowly defeated the GCU women’s club team, 60-57, on Wednesday, Nov. 8.
This was the third home game of the season for the Lady Gauchos and it marks the second to last exhibition game before they start conference play.
“I thought that we started out a little slow in the beginning, with our rebounding, both offensively and defensively. But coach got on our heads and told us that was what we needed to do to win, so thats what we did,” freshman forward Mallory Vivola.
Despite the slow start GCC was able to make some adjustments to preserve a narrow victory.

“[We started] boxing out every play, finding our girls early and we got the win” Vivola said.
Despite the victory head coach Jen Niebling still saw some things that they need to work on to get better.
“The girls on a grading scale probably got like a ‘C’ or ‘C’ minus. But, they just kept playing. They competed, they got steals they pushed it, we missed a lot of layups, missed a lot of free throws and didn’t do a lot of things right, but they just stayed together and got it done. I’m really proud of them,” Niebling said.
Coach Niebling was really happy with the way her team competed throughout the game.
“[the way they competed] is awesome, we as coaches can draw up all the plays we want, but its whats inside that counts. Especially Mallory here, she just turned it up another level to help us get that win” Niebling said.
“We are really happy with the win, it was a close game, we competed and its a great way to start the season off” Vivola said.
The Gauchos will open up conference play on the road against Chandler-Gilbert on Tuesday, Nov. 21, tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
