The Glendale Community College Women’s Basketball team continued their winning ways on Jan. 24, as they defeated the Chandler-Gilbert Coyotes, 58-53.
“Everything is going right right now,” Freshman Mallory Viola said.
This victory comes off the heels of another solid victory against Eastern Arizona and improves their record to 11-7. The Gauchos are now seven of their last ten and sit in sixth place in the conference standings.
“Our chemistry has been great. Whoever scores, everyone is psyched for them. Just to have a team where everyone feels like they are a part of it, they’re pulling for each other, and they’re excited for each other. That’s what makes a team. It’s been a lot of fun,” Coach Jen Niebling said.
The Gauchos got off to a slow start and trailed by six at the half.
“We thought we could get away with just shooting the ball and not hustling and Chandler-Gilbert came out like gangbusters and beat us to every loose ball, every rebound and made shots, and got all jacked up, and we realized we were in a fight,” Niebling said.
Despite the early adversity, the Gauchos put together a 19-5 run in the third quarter and hit some shots late to close out the ball game.
“We started to dictate the game with our defense instead of passively letting them do their thing. You have to give them credit. They hit a lot of shots, but our girls battled back, and we had to turn up our aggressiveness,” Niebling said.
“Coming into half time down, we realized we can’t take [Chandler-Gilbert] lightly. We have to put it to them, I think we are second half team, not to say that we are able to get down, but when it does happen we are able to come back from it,” Freshman Tierney Dedonatis said.
After the game, Coach Niebling was really impressed with the way her team fought, especially in the second half.
“They have a great sense for what they want to do. For the most part they make the calls and we just kind of follow along. Mallory is a gamer, Tierney is a gamer, Ella is a gamer and they are going to fight right until the end,” Niebling said.
The next home game for the Gauchos is Jan. 31 against Pima. That game will start at 5:30 p.m.
