Tryst Café is a restaurant featuring local, natural and organic foods with many gluten-free options.
When entering the restaurant there is instantly a mood change from the bright outside. Steel tables, a polished concrete floor and the open ceiling give a minimal and clean feeling to the space. The atmosphere is both relaxing and elegant.
The café serves soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers, wraps, melts, tacos and a wide-range of beverages.
The caprese is a starter for $9 which features house-made buffalo mozzarella served with tomatoes and fresh basil and topped with a zesty balsamic reduction.
Other appetizers include honey-glazed brussel sprouts, freshly prepared hummus, brie cheese wheels and beer battered green beans. Tryst has been voted Best of Phoenix in 2011 by the Phoenix New Times for their unique use of green beans for their beer battered green beans.
A great entree is the Free-Range Tortilla Soup that that features spiced free-range, natural chicken and includes sour cream and pico de gallo.
“The free-range tortilla soup is the perfect temperature to eat. I’ve had a lot of tortilla soups from around the valley and this is the best I’ve ever had. The consistency is nice, the size of everything in it is perfect. It just really is a good tortilla soup,” says Mezza Mead, 50-year-old massage therapist and foodie, who is also a fan of Tryst.
The server mentioned that the pork is one of their specialties. The all natural pork is slowly roasted for five hours in banana leaves seasoned with their special spice blend. Tryst won the Golden Grub Award in 2014 for their Kalua Pork Sandwich, which is served on a local brioche bun with house barbecue sauce and a side of sweet potato tots.
The house-roasted pork on the Adobo Tacos is an entree which would make any Arizonan happy. The all-natural roasted pork is simmered with spices and achiote sauce served inside corn tortillas. The tacos are topped with red cabbage and habanero cream with a side of seasoned rice.
“Their pork is pretty good. The pork was perfectly seasoned and juicy and the portion was hefty. The flavor was unique, almost like barbecue. The side of cabbage is crispy and fresh. The pork reminds me of a Memphis barbecue,” says Daniel Efroc, a chef of 15 years.
For those seeking a refreshing drink Tryst Café offers many wines and a cocktail menu which features organic ingredients. They also serve an organic and alcoholic kombucha from Wild Tonic, a local kombucha brewery in Cottonwood, Arizona.
The desserts are beyond amazing. The server recommended the blood orange gelato, the flavor of the day, as well as the Grand Teton, an imposing pyramid shaped marbled chocolate confection.
The Grand Teton alone is worth a trip to Tryst. The balance of dark chocolate and white chocolate, thick and airy mousse with the crunch of hazelnut, and soft cake topped with the sharp twang of the raspberry syrup is sure to delight. It is typically served alongside the café’s organic espresso— it’s a perfect way to end a refreshing meal.
Tryst offers a loyalty program where you earn $25 for every $200 you spend. Meals can be ordered online and paid online or in person.
Children, ages 10 and under, eat free off the children’s menu 4 p.m. to close on Sundays.
